Akira Kurosawa painting on set of Dodes’ka-den (1970)

Akira Kurosawa painting on set of Dodes’ka-den (1970). Unknown photographer. Thank you Tarun Neo for your contribution.

Daisaku Kimura, first assistant cameraman on Dodes’ka-den: I thought he would be demanding about getting the colors he wanted, but he said nothing about that. On Dodes’ka-den, what he did was to use color without relying on the film stock itself. He painted every object to be filmed. He didn’t trust the film stock. He painted everything. The sunset in the film was created on a soundstage. He told us to paint it however we liked, so I joined in. But when Kurosawa tells you to paint, it makes you nervous. He was an artist himself, so everyone was nervous. But he said not to worry, to be like kids painting picture books, so we went ahead.

Georges Franju on the set of “Les Yeux Sans Visage”

Georges Franju (1912-1987), French director extraordinaire and founder of “La Cinémathèque de France” in Paris along with Henri Langlois is also the creator of the masterpiece “Les Yeux sans Visage” in 1960.
I am happy to present these hard-to-find photos of one of my favorite figures working behind the scenes.

Joseph Mankiewicz on the set of “Guys & Dolls”

A lovely, colorful and neon-filled photo of Joseph Mankiewicz, mainly known for his work on All About Eve (1950), The Barefoot Contessa (1954) & Cleopatra (1963).  He is here on the set of  his musical “Guys & Dolls” (1955), a lesser-known work of his. Although Sinatra wanted the lead role all to himself that eventually went to Marlon Brando, he also stars with Jean Simmons & Vivian Blaine. And yes, Brando actually sings in the film.

Here’s the photo of the director, Joseph Mankiewicz, sitting in a seat on a crane watching unseen activity during filming of “Guys and Dolls”. Check it out if you enjoy musicals, the Sinatra-Brando combination is a guaranteed winner ! 😀

About Joseph Losey’s “The Servant” (1963)

A Harold Pinter adaptation, the first of three done by Joseph Losey ( the others being “Accident” (1967 ) & “The Go-Between” (1970)), “The Servant” (1963) apparently required some serious re-writing at first.
But the final product is amazing to say the least: With its latent homosexuality, criticism of the idleness of the wealthy, the ultimate inversion of master and servant roles and the fascinating faces of Dirk Bogade & James Fox, Losey delivers a masterpiece that you should not miss out on.
Check out the director with Harold Pinter and James Fox on the set of the film (All rights go to The Guardian UK) & below it, some of my favorite shots from the film.
